By Dan Pacheco
WashingtonPost.com
The following instructions explain how to configure Netscape Navigator, the most popular Web browser, to play QuickTime video files. These instructions assume you are using Windows 3.1. We also offer help for Windows 95 and Macintosh.
Install QuickTime
To see QuickTime videos, there's no shortcut: you must have Apple's QuickTime software. Here's how to get it:
Step 1 - Get QuickTime Software
First, create a new folder and name it "download." To do this, minimize all of the windows on your computer and open the File Manager, which should be in the "Main" program group. Create a new directory (choose "Directory" and "Create") and name it "download." Return to the browser by holding down the "Alt" key and pressing "Tab" repeatedly.
Go to Apple's QuickTime download page and click one of the links under the heading "QuickTime 2.1.2 for Windows 3.1". When the browser asks you where to save the file, choose the folder "download" which you just created.
When the download is complete, go to File Manager, open c:\download, find qt16.exe and click twice on it. This will cause several more files to appear. Double-click qt16inst.exe and follow the instructions on your screen.
After QuickTime has installed, find qt16.exe again and delete it.
If you have Netscape Navigator 3.0, you're all set to try a sample video. If not, go on to ...
Step 2 - Upgrade to Netscape Navigator 3.0 (Optional)
Upgrading to Navigator 3.0 is not absolutely necessary, but it will allow you to view QuickTime videos without any further setup. Find out how to get the latest version of Netscape in our Netscape upgrade guide. Then skip ahead to view a sample QuickTime movie.
If You Don't Want to Upgrade ...
If you don't want to upgrade to Navigator 3.0, you can still use Netscape to use
the QuickTime software you just downloaded. Here's how:
Return to Netscape, go to the "Options" menu and choose "General Preferences," then "Helpers."
Scroll down until you see a line like this:
| File Type | Action | Extensions |
| video-quicktime | . | qt, mov |
Select that line and, at the bottom of the window, click "Launch the Application" and "Browse." Locate the directory c:\windows and click twice on the file player.exe. Click OK.
Go to the "Options" menu again and choose "Save Options." Then go on to the next step to ...
Step 3: View a Sample QuickTime Clip
Click on the following link to start downloading a sample QuickTime movie.
Pumpkin (Quicktime, 51K)
You should see a box like this:
To see the pumpkin glow, just click the play button, which is similar to the one on a VCR.

Wait! What if I Already Have QuickTime?
If you recently installed a multi-media CD-ROM, it's possible that you already have QuickTime on your computer. So why download this version? This is QuickTime version 2.1.2, and you could have version 2.1.1.
If you're absolutely sure that you have the latest version, skip step 1. But if you have any doubts, we recommend going ahead with the download. The QuickTime installer will alert you if you don't need to upgrade. If it asks you if you would like to delete the old version of QuickTime, say yes.
